Need a fun, hands-on activity for students to review their knowledge of US presidents? This reusable sorting activity will help your students organize the information they are learning about each president! Often children need help ‘filing’ what they learn in the correct ‘drawers in their brains’ and building connections between the concepts they learn. This resource provides hands-on, active practice at organizing a variety of facts about each president.
Students will have fun sorting and matching the following information to each president:
State they were from.
Which number president they were.
Job prior to becoming president.
Political party affiliation.
Four other facts, including information from their childhood, life before and after their presidency, and accomplishments during their presidency.
This activity is great for assessing what students learned at the end of a unit. Use around President’s Day or throughout the year as part of an American History curriculum.
Students can work alone or in small groups. The President Sorting Mats can be turned into a game by setting a timer to see how fast students can match the information. Students can work to improve and beat their prior time or compete against other students.
This set contains sorting mats for all 46 presidents, divided and color coded into sets of five. Students will sort through the facts and match them to each of the five presidents in that set. An answer key is included that students can use to self-check their work.
Differentiate the activity by putting out the mats for just two or three presidents at a time. And/or limit the types of cards you put out to just a couple categories, such as picture and years served or picture and a few facts.
